Introduction

Writing and publishing scientific papers is a challenging process for many academicians, researchers, postgraduate students and others scholars. Poor preparation of manuscripts and inappropriate selection of publishing channels often prevent or delay the publication of good scientific findings and ideas. Unfortunately, many scholars are often trained on subjects and technical aspects of science while the scholarly writing skills are neglected. In short, many good scholars lack scientific writing and publishing skills because they have never undertaken formal courses in this aspect. Many have only learned to imitate the writing styles and approaches of their instructors and previous authors.

Expected Outcomes

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Prepare high-quality manuscripts that have a high chance of being accepted for publication.
  • Understand the structural components of scientific papers.
  • Understand the publication process and how to deal with reviewers’ comments.
  • Use citation and reference management software.
  • Choose the right journals for publishing.
  • Information retrieval and text mining
  • Publication process and evaluation of published science
  • Ethics in scientific writing,
  • Information searching and discovery in an online environment

TARGET AUDIENCE:

This short course is targeted to PhD candidate and MSc students by Research, faculty members, academic librarians and other researchers and practitioners from outside the Sokoine University of Agriculture.

INTRODUCTION

Office Management and Practice is an exciting and interactive training course.  It is designed to provide office administrators, supervisors of clerical and administrative staff, executive secretaries and personal assistants the opportunity to review and develop the interpersonal and professional skills they need to do their jobs effectively – thereby contributing to their own, their boss’ and their organization’s success. This course is intended to increase the skills of Support personnel across a range of disciplines. The course identifies and examines the key components of the role and within each element builds up a range of approaches and techniques for operating an efficient office or support team. These elements include interpersonal, communication, organizational and time management competencies. These skills and techniques will be required in a blended and integrated way as you meet the challenges of your workplace.

Course Description


The world is now moving to a fourth industrial revolution which is already trending, where research and innovation are based on technology and data-driven. Research-based institutions, organizations and governments are determined in this movement. In this revolution, researchers and research institutions are expected to make their data open for sharing, collaboration and reuse. The course aims at raising awareness and imparting skills and knowledge on Open Data/Science and Research Data Management (RDM). Knowledge in RDM will enable researchers and institutions to manage their data in every stage of the research data life cycle for ultimately sharing valuable data, attract collaborations and accelerate research and innovation.


Learning Outcomes


Candidates who will successfully complete this course will be able to;


i) Describe the general concept of RDM
ii) Understand the importance of RDM to researchers, institutions and the general community
iii) Identify reasons for establishing RDM service including research funders’ mandates
iv) Explain Data Life Cycle
v) Develop a Data Management Plan (DMP) using available open resources
vi) Prepare data for long term preservation including metadata standards describing data
vii) Publish research data in open data repositories
viii) Understand open access data tools and training resources for different data practitioners.
ix) Deposit data in open data repositories such as Zonedo
